Tiburon Boulevard Bike Lane Critics Fail to Deter Caltrans’ Efforts to Safely Connect Mill Valley, Tiburon and the Tiburon Ferry to the Benefit of Both Residents and Tourists
At East Strawberry Drive, the right turn lane onto eastbound Tiburon Boulevard would be removed and the existing bus stop on Tiburon Boulevard would be relocated. Not all are happy with these changes. According to the Marin Independent Journal this week, there’s plenty of local opposition to additional bike safety measures in Tiburon. But despite local opposition, bike lanes will be added to both sides of Tiburon Boulevard when the road is upgraded next year. “The bike lanes will stay,” said Matt O’Donnell, a Caltrans spokesperson. “Can there be adjustments to the bike lanes? Yes, that’s a possibility. … But, for the most part, these are tweaks.”

“One of the reasons why we wanted to locate our task force meeting in Marin is the remarkable work that’s actually happening on a community scale,” said state Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot, co-chair of the task force. The task force held a series of panel discussions at the Embassy Suites in San Rafael on March 29. More than 400 attended in person and more than 300 tuned in online.

Talia Smith, the county’s director of legislative and intergovernmental affairs, provided other stark data points in a presentation to the board. From 2019 to 2022, 911 calls for all youth bike collisions in Marin County increased 110%. Records collected since 2023 show 10- to 15-year-olds have an accident rate five times higher than other age groups.

Moulton-Peters, the county’s representative on BCDC, acknowledged the results of the UC Berkeley study, but added, “The lived experience of people that we have heard from in this county and elsewhere is very different. We need to make a more reliable commute for the people coming from the East Bay to work in Marin.” Additional changes are planned for the bridge, including removing the toll booths at east end and reinstating a previous high occupancy vehicle lane on the westbound upper deck. Planners are also studying the possibility of using the multiuse lane as an additional lane for carpools and buses.

“We find that happiness is aligned with specific quality of life ratings. In particular, jobs, leisure, and housing,” Baldassare said, according to the report. “In our polling, we also looked at personal finance. But the biggest change we’ve seen over time has been satisfaction with jobs, which went from 52% saying they were very satisfied in our first polling to 31% today.” Other polling, by Gallup, asked Californians to rate their satisfaction of life from 1 to 10. A research team from the University of Oxford then compiled all 215,801 responses into a map of the state, broken down by county.
