Arts & Entertainment

The spirit of artistic creation runs deep in our bones in Mill Valley, with a mixture of world-class entertainment and small town vibe, drawing people from all over the Bay Area. We have attracted nationally known artists to our stages for decades, from the late Jerry Garcia to the ubiquitous Snoop Dogg.

That fabric includes major live music festivals like the Mill Valley Music Fest, which draws nearly 10,000 people to town in mid-May, and Sound Summit, one of the biggest and most locally beneficial live music events in town, set in one of the Bay Area’s most spectacular and intimate venues at the historic Mountain Theater, a 4,000-seat natural stone amphitheater atop Mount Tamalpais.

For years, the Mill Valley Film Festival has made its name on (at least) a trio of attributes: an incredibly eclectic, boundary-pushing selection of films from all over the globe; an almost eery ability to showcase films that end up garnering Academy Awards; and celebrity appearances by actors and directors to receive in-person tributes and to accompany awards-worthy screenings.

With the Marin Theatre Company and the Throckmorton Theatre and a bevy of smaller spaces that bring dazzling creativity, the professional theatre scene is vibrant, and the town is host to an 11-day film festival sells over 40,000 tickets and welcomes more than 200 filmmakers from around the world.

Mill Valley is home and muse to many visual artists who show their work in studio, shops and galleries. Interesting lectures, literary events and other cultural programs add to the vibrant life of the community. Regardless of the day of the week, there is always something happening in Mill Valley. Be sure to check our special events and events calendar and the websites of the individual venues listed below for the most up-to-date schedule and ticket information.

Mill Valley’s Throckmorton plays host each year to DjangoFest, the longstanding event inspired by the late gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, with an array of concerts, workshops and parties.

And don’t get us started on the venerable Sweetwater Music Hall, which has top-notch live music just about every night of the week, as often does the Throckmorton Theatre.

Mill Valley also showcases thrilling live music at long-cherished festivals like the Homestead Valley Music, which returns on August 26th at the Homestead Meadow, as well as the Creekside Fridays at the Tam Valley Community Center.

And while the buskers and the bands keep playin’ year-round, one of the most exciting live music events returns September 9-10 as the Mill Valley Arts Commission’s brings back the Concerts in the Plaza series with two full days of live music featuring an array of acclaimed local bands, as well as a few exciting special guests.
