In his first City Council hearing since he became mayor this month, Councilmember Urban Carmel sought to answer a question he’s often asked: why would you want to serve on City Council and why would you want to be in public service?
“The answer I gave is the it’s the people in this community,” he said. “People bring incredible passion, intelligence, interest, time, effort, often their pocketbook, to make this community better. I’ve never seen anything like this community anywhere I’ve ever lived in my life.”
“I don’t think you can find another community that’s like Mill Valley,” he added. “If there is something that needs to get done, there are people there to get it done, whether it’s our downtown through the Chamber, our SLPs, our library, our educational system, our fields, our recreational facilities, our creeks, our sustainability efforts, our sports leagues, the golf course.”
“Whatever it is, there is a group of people who will put their time and their talent into making it happen,” Carmel said. “And that is incredibly inspiring. How can you not want to be part of public service when you’ve got a community that’s so committed to making this town better and that’s because people love this town.”
