We’re in Week 4 of Plastic Free July—and if you’ve picked up some new tips and have taken just one action, you’re already making an impact. This week, we’re focusing on one of the most important shifts you can make:
Avoiding plastic isn’t just an environmental choice—it’s a health decision. Here’s why: 99% of plastic is made from fossil fuels, and it contains harmful additives like BPA, phthalates, and PFAS. These chemicals leach into our food, drinks, and personal care products, especially when exposed to heat or oil.
Exposure has been linked to serious health issues: Hormone disruption; Infertility and reproductive harm; Early puberty; Immune system suppression; Certain cancers (breast, prostate, testicular)
A 2023 study published in Environmental Science & Technology found microplastics in 100% of human placenta samples tested—a sobering reminder that what we consume and touch enters our bodies. Choosing plastic-free isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about taking back control over what touches your body and feeds your family.
Where to Shop Safer, Plastic-Free Products in Marin
Local Favorites: Sustainable Exchange, San Rafael – Dan the owner is SUPER knowledgable & passionate about reducing plastic. He carries many household cleaning staples like detergents, baking soda, epsom salts, vinegar (they have 5% & 30%), as well as shampoos, soaps, oils, and sundries. This is the place to go for more DIY and price-conscious products.
-
Beauty Heroes, Novato – Run by a seasoned beauty-care professional. She carries only “clean beauty” products & has a more stringent standard than Credo. In her store, she has a section where you can buy more elevated body & haircare products in bulk. It’s a small selection, though.
-
Good Earth, Mill Valley & Fairfax – Obviously a grocery store. But, they also carry bulk body care items. In addition, their bulk section for dry goods (nuts, rice, beans, grains, etc.) is excellent. In addition to their bulk spice, herb & tea selection. They also carry honey, oils (olive & avocado) & nut butter in bulk. I’m saving 30-60% by not buying packaging for much of my basic food items. Don’t forget to bring own reusable containers for when you buy meats and they gladly fill those instead of wrapping them in plastics.
