Marin IJ Editorial Board: With Sympathies for LA, Marin Prepares for Next Wildfire
The voter-approved formation of the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority has advanced long-needed work to create and maintain so-called “fuel breaks” in hopes of giving fire crews a fighting chance to save neighborhoods. Crews have been working to create large fuel breaks in Ross Valley and Novato. Reducing vegetation along evacuation routes has been another priority.

The entire village of 250 affordable apartments will rest on about 8 acres at the site of a former San Quentin State Prison gun range. It is near the Larkspur ferry terminal, a Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit station, bus stops, bike trails and other amenities. The entire project, which began in the planning stages about four years ago, has been estimated to cost about $238 million.

Space Theory will be located in a separate 4,000-square-foot building next to Henrybuilt in Mill Valley, and is the first of five new Space Theory showrooms scheduled to open in the United States by the end of 2026. The new Mill Valley showroom will showcase the company’s products, house a design studio and be open to the public. Space Theory offers a complete system, including storage units, pulls, integrated lighting, modular interior accessories, countertops, backsplashes and sinks solely for the kitchen.

Monica Barbaro, 34, who grew up in Mill Valley and went to Tam High, (home of the Bay Area’s M Ill Valley Film Festival) just scored a nomination for best supporting actress for her role in “A Complete Unknown,” the Bob Dylan biopic. The Bay Area isn’t a feature film superpower, but it pulls its weight in awards season, according to SFGate. The region also scored a well-deserved nomination for “Inside Out 2. The Bob Dylan biopic scored eight Oscar nominations, including a best picture nod and an actor nomination for Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of the icon. Barbaro plays the legendary folk musician Joan Baez, who becomes romantically entangled with Dylan as they tour together.

Construction crews have been working steadily to complete the final section of the 17-mile Marin-Sonoma Narrows project to add high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes along US-101 from Novato to Petaluma. Travelers along northbound US-101, in the construction area, can expect an alignment shift in early 2025 as crews move to finalize the median barrier, final paving and striping in preparation to shift traffic onto the HOV lanes in summer 2025. When the HOV lanes are open, they will complete a 52-mile HOV system from the Richardson Bay Bridge in southern Marin County to Windsor in Sonoma County.
