City of Mill Valley Builds on Evacuation Strategies, Launches ‘Take One Car’ Campaign for Safer Wildfire Evacuations
Researchers found that by directing evacuees to use a less-frequented on-ramp to Highway 101 off Hamilton Drive, implementing a contraflow strategy on East Blithedale Avenue, and encouraging households to evacuate with only one vehicle significantly reduced overall evacuation times, cutting nearly 2 hours off the process.Ā In response, in 2024, City officials conducted staff drills, revamped evacuation routes, and emphasized to residents the message:Ā āTake one car, save the lives of those behind you.ā This strategy ensures a faster, safer evacuation for all residents. Organizers have several sites in mind, the IJ reports, though they are mum on specifics. Proposals still have to be vetted, Runner said, acknowledging that there are few potential sites left in Marin. āWeāre still working on the long-term goals,ā Runner said. The restoration work on the 103-year-old, 36-ton engine is being guided by brothers Jeff and Don Millerick at a workshop in Sebastopol.

“The largest item on Novemberās ballot is a $10 to 20 billion regional bond that, if passed, promises to create 45,000 affordable homes in the nine-county Bay Area,” he wrote. “Itās sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Commissionās Bay Area Housing Finance Agency. BAHFA reports that āa $10 billion bond would require a tax of $10.26 per $100,000 in assessed value ā or about $100 per year for a million-dollar home.ā Double that if the bond is for $20 billion.”
