For the past two years, Tam Junction resident Adam Cohen has used his popular Tam Glad website and blog to focus on the wonders of the 94941’s funkiest commercial district, radiating his “head over heels” feelings toward his neighborhood and churning out stories about the likes of Early Bird Tacos, Red Whale Coffee, TJ’s Gym, Susie Turner’s Green Door Design, the multi-faceted Xtracycleand Aaron Singer’s Seaplane Adventures.
While sitting at the cafe at Good Earth in Tam Junction, Cohen caught a glimpse of a passenger van stacked with surfboards with “Ladies Shred” on it, and he knew needed to know more.
The more was Ladies Shred, an epic summer camp and women’s skate community born in Marin and created by Lilja (Lily-uh) but better known as Lil.
“What I have witnessed as a direct result of holding space for ‘just’ us girls is this: My kids feel safe to be themselves, older kids become leaders to the youngins, youngins reteach the older kids to be silly and have fun, a small group of eclectic ages is radical, we become a team the moment we all gather in the van, confidence and pride in abilities soar, the flow of conversations about things we struggle with, learning how to navigate being a girl (or identifying) in the water or at the skatepark takes support,” Lil told Cohen. “The create day allows us to express ourselves and laugh together!”
