The 2025 Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade is In the books! This year’s theme was “Strength in Numbers,” representing our tight-woven community spirit, how, as a town, we come together and get things done in a way that makes Mill Valley the best place to live in America! We heard some outstanding essays from local students, as well as from Mill Valley Police Chief Rick Navarro, Board pf Supervisors Stephanie Moulton-Peters, and many more! There was also plenty of fun at the Pancake Breakfast, the KIDDO! Carnival and after Parade party.

We have a common and accepted practice of requiring housing developers, or any business that creates an impact on its neighbors, to mitigate the damage to communities from their actions. These fees pay for traffic, school and environmental impacts. We should now assess the same cost to these technology platforms for the harms they have caused to California teens, the public school system and independent news reporting. No one likes new taxes, but most people understand the necessity if the money is going to compelling needs, with accountability and oversight. In this case, the new proposed tax would only be paid by the entities causing the harm. Last month, Google, Meta and Amazon reported first-quarter profits in the tens of billions of dollars.

The Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade is right around the corner! The Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade (check out the website) Mill Valley’s biggest annual event is Monday, May 26, 2025. The parade starts with the very special Veterans Ceremony, which includes the student K-8 essay contest “What does Memorial Day mean to me,” beginning at 9:45 am at Lytton Square, followed by the parade at 10:30 am. The I Love a Parade committee, Larry ‘The Hat’ Lautzker, Paul Moe, and Clifford Waldeck invite you to get together with your neighbors and friends or support local organizations and create wondrous floats. Enter your Classic Car, bring your pet kangaroo, and get creative! We’re returning the glory days of Mill Valley Parades, Color Guard, Great floats, Dogs marching, and Classic Cars, with trophies for best in all (see entry form) categories.

I’ve seen firsthand how much this community can accomplish when we come together. A few years back, during the North Bay fires, we raised $600,000 for families in need—and I know we can do it again. Mill Valley Middle School (MVMS) is thrilled to announce an exciting new tutoring initiative aimed at providing enhanced academic support for its students. Spearheaded by former MVMS student Brady Dresner in collaboration with 6th grade Counselor Erin Sheedy, this program is designed to foster collaboration and promote academic growth within our community. Starting Monday, October 14, 2024, students from Tam High will be available in the MVMS library every Monday and Thursday from 3:05pm to 4pm. They will offer free tutoring sessions across all subjects, ensuring that every student has the resources they need to succeed.

But even the diehards might not know how a massively impactful restructuring of the organization over the past year will not only lift up one of the best live music venues in the Bay Area, but will also do so for a network of tangential organizations that can benefit from Sweetwater’s transition. In January, Sweetwater began operating as an IRS registered 501(c)(3) so that they can continue to provide music programming to their community and to their underserved and youth communities. The not-for-profit status also helps the Sweetwater with its fundraising efforts to continue as a pre-eminent independent Bay Area music venue.
