MV Rotary Hosts Shirley Hasley, Mill Valley’s First Black Teacher, Who Has Dedicated Her Life to Educating Children – Feb. 6, 12pm

On threat of violence, Shirley was forced to seek housing outside the city limits.Ā 

In her first year as a teacher, this 22-year-old young woman was assigned to travel with students being bused from Mill Valley to Marin City. It was desegregation in 1965. Was Shirley a natural fit? Hardly. Her presence was resented by many in Marin City. She was called an ā€œUncle Tomā€ and she needed police protection.Ā

Mill Valley Planning Commission Begins Critical Rezoning Process

The Mill Valley Planning Commission, led by Senior Planner, Advanced Planning Danielle Staude, began the re-zoning process this week.Ā The lengthy hearing saw the commission take action to recommend adoption the of the re-zonings in the ordinance and to establish regulations for their housing overlays. The commissionĀ will further discuss objective design standards at the Feb 13th Planning Commission hearing.Ā

Voters in the district will consider a proposal to repair and upgrade the district’s five high schools. If approved, Measure A authorizes $517 million in bonds at legal rates, levying $30 per $100,000 assessed value while bonds are outstanding ($36 million annually) with independent oversight, annual audits, no funds for administrators and all funds locally controlled.
