Marin IJ Editorial Board: With Sympathies for LA, Marin Prepares for Next Wildfire
The voter-approved formation of the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority has advanced long-needed work to create and maintain so-called “fuel breaks” in hopes of giving fire crews a fighting chance to save neighborhoods. Crews have been working to create large fuel breaks in Ross Valley and Novato. Reducing vegetation along evacuation routes has been another priority.

Researchers found that by directing evacuees to use a less-frequented on-ramp to Highway 101 off Hamilton Drive, implementing a contraflow strategy on East Blithedale Avenue, and encouraging households to evacuate with only one vehicle significantly reduced overall evacuation times, cutting nearly 2 hours off the process. In response, in 2024, City officials conducted staff drills, revamped evacuation routes, and emphasized to residents the message: “Take one car, save the lives of those behind you.” This strategy ensures a faster, safer evacuation for all residents. The arrival of the 2025 New Year provides a great reminder that the Gravity Car Barn, which opened on May 3, 2009, remains an incredible resource for train lovers and many more, in honor of the Mill Valley and Mt. Tamalpais Scenic Railway. It has become a permanent home for the brilliantly recreated Gravity Car and an interpretive display highlighting this special time in California and Mt. Tamalpais history. The Barn has been constructed over a section of the 98 feet of standard gauge track at the historic rail siding on East Peak and will serve as an educational facility and visitor center for Marin and beyond.

According to food reporter Elena Kadvany, after nearly two decades in the Dogpatch neighborhood, beloved San Francisco restaurant Piccino is expanding to two new locations – first in the Presidio and, likely in Mill Valley in early 2026, set at 242 Redwood Highway Frontage Rd., the space near Seaplane Adventures facility along the waterfront.

Over the last eight years, MEF has received an average of more than $177,000 per year from the county. For the fiscal year that began in July, however, the county had budgeted only $100,000 for the organization. Lucan said the allocation was reduced because de la Rosa would be carrying some of the load. Nevertheless, Lucan said he considers MEF a “big success.”

Organizers seek to get $50k from the volleyball community and plan to raise about $100,000 from a dozen community minded Mill Valley families,” organizers say. “We appreciate you being one of the community minded individuals that make Mill Valley such a wonderful place to live in!” The fencing to support the creation for this new exciting addition to the town will require significant funding.
