Smallpox killed somewhere between 300 million and 500 million people in the 20th century. Wouldn’t it be interesting to hear from the Mill Valley doctor who played a key role in eradicating smallpox in India?

The Outdoor Art Club is making that happen. The stalwart women’s organization is hosting a talk from TED Prize winner Dr. Larry Brilliant, one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people, at 1pm on Nov. 30, a free event that is open to the public.

Brilliant’s talk centers on his 2016 memoir Sometimes Brilliant: The Impossible Adventure of a Spiritual Seeker and Visionary Physician Who Helped Conquer the Worst Disease in History. Jack Kornfield, founder of Marin’s Spirit Rock Meditation Center, calls the book “a wildly inspiring, wondrous, improbable, heartbreaking and triumphant tale,” while  And Sausalito’s Dean Ornish, clinical professor of medicine at UC San Francisco and founder and president of Preventive Medicine Research Institute, says Sometimes Brilliant is “one of the best books I’ve ever read, period.”

The 411: Dr. Larry Brilliant speaks about his 2016 memoir Sometimes Brilliant: The Impossible Adventure of a Spiritual Seeker and Visionary Physician Who Helped Conquer the Worst Disease in History at the Outdoor Art Club, One West Blithedale Ave., at 1pm on Nov. 30. Free & open to the public.
