One year after exploring the massively successful Beauty and the Beast, producers of the Mountain Play have turned their attention to Mamma Mia!, the Broadway smash hit musical potently powered by the songs of legendary Swedish group ABBA, for their 105th season of outdoor theater atop Mount Tam.

The “story of love, music, strong women, and family” is set on “a magical Greek island, Mamma Mia! traces the tale of Sophie, a young girl about to get married and create her dream life…but there is just one hitch, she has never met her father. She invites all three potential dads to the wedding so she can finally solve the mystery and have him walk her down the aisle,” according to the Mountain Play.

Performances are on Sunday, May 20, May 27, June 3, June 10 and June 17. Not surprisingly for a beloved musical that means heavily on ABBA classics like “Honey Honey,” “Does Your Mother Know,” “Dancing Queen,” and “Take a Chance,” the Mountain Play has created a special June 9th performance as a “Sing-Along Saturday,” with attendees encouraged to sing along to the show. All shows begin at 2 pm, and organizers encourage attendees to arrive at least one hour prior to show time.

Directed by Mountain Play stalwart Jay Manley with musical direction from Jon Gallo and Choreography by Nicole Helfer and Zoë Swenson-Graham, the production of Mamma Mia! is set in Cushing Memorial Amphitheatre within Mount Tamalpais State Park. Each performance features pre-show entertainment, from the Marin Girls Chorus (May 20) and ‘Til Dawn (May 27) to Shelley Doty (June 3), Natalia Betzler (June 10) and a Father’s Day Picnic Contest with Celebrity Judge Chef Roland Passot (June 17).

The 411: The Mountain Play‘s production of Mamma Mia! runs on Sundays from May 20-June 17. MORE INFO & TIX. Attendees are strongly encouraged to avoid driving. And there are plenty of great food options.
