De Lone has been a staple at the Sweetwater for decades, whether it was his ability to gather his star-studded companions to rally support for the Sweetwater itself during the ebbs and flows of its changes over time, or his diehard support for Prader-Willi Homes of California, which has regularly recruitedĀ a stellar lineup of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass favorites, including Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Chuck Prophet and His Cumbia Shoes, Bill Kirchen, Austin de Lone, the legendary Lost Planet Airmen ā five original members of Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen and much more to supportĀ a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing and supporting residential living for individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome.
Austin de LoneĀ is an AmericanĀ keyboardistĀ who records and tours with his own bands as well as with other artists, such asĀ Bill Kirchen,Ā Elvis Costello,Ā Bonnie Raitt,Ā Boz Scaggs,Ā Nick Lowe,Ā Commander Cody, andĀ Loudon Wainwright. HeĀ grew up in suburban Philadelphia, taking piano lessons at age 12. His early influences includedĀ Ray CharlesĀ andĀ George Shearing. After stints as a student at theĀ New England Conservatory of Music,Ā Harvard University, andĀ University of California, Berkeley, he moved toĀ Greenwich Village.Ā While at Harvard, de Lone composed the song “One for One,” which was the first single released byĀ Linda RonstadtĀ and theĀ Stone Poneys.[1]
In 1969, de Lone formed the bandĀ Eggs over EasyĀ with Jack OāHara and Brien Hopkins.Ā In 1970,Ā Chas ChandlerĀ persuaded the band to record inĀ London, but those recordings were not released.
A four-night-a-week residency at a pub called the Tally-Ho inĀ Kentish TownĀ lasted more than a year. Eggs over Easy played a blend of blues, country, and rock that became known asĀ pub rock.[2]Ā Regular attendees of their shows included members ofĀ Brinsley SchwarzĀ andĀ BBCĀ disc jockeyĀ John Peel. In 1972, they returned to California and released their first albumĀ Good ‘N’ CheapĀ produced byĀ Link Wray.[5]
The Moonlighters
De Lone moved to Marin, CaliforniaĀ in 1972, where he metĀ Bill Kirchen, who had been performing withĀ Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. In the late 70s, de Lone joined Kirchen’s side-project band, the Moonlighters.Ā Their 1983 albumĀ Rush HourĀ was produced byĀ Nick Lowe. Both de Lone and Kirchen later worked with Lowe andĀ Elvis Costello. De Lone and Kirchen still record and perform together. In 2016, they released their duet albumĀ Transatlantica.
The Christmas Jug Band
De Lone is a member of the Christmas Jug Band, a collection of musicians who have been touring locally each holiday season since 1976, and releasing albums since 1987. The band has included musicians such asĀ Dan Hicks, Tim Eschliman, Jim Rothermel, Lance Dickerson, Brien Hopkins, andĀ Norton Buffalo.
De Lone and his wife LesleyĀ live inĀ Mill Valley. Their daughter Caroline de Lone is a singer, songwriter, and recording artist who has appeared withĀ Buddy MillerĀ andĀ Bonnie Raitt.
