Kate Barrengos grew up on the wind-swept plains of Nebraska and has lived in Mill Valley for over 20 years. In her studio space in Sausalito, she paints a variety of subjects including landscapes, still lifes, and anthropomorphic portraits of forgotten women. The variation allows her to engage with her work in refreshing ways.

For her current exhibit, “Mill Valley,” Barrengos “celebrates a town where you can stumble out the front door, head off in any direction, and find beauty.  The work is  purposefully simplified and fantastical, painted with acrylic on linen in a 20×16-inch vertical format.  This consistency and directness underscores how remarkable this town is.”

Barrengos is set to show her gorgeous work on the walls of the Mill Valley Chamber’s space at 85 Throckmorton Ave., including a reception on Tuesday, April 4, as part of the Mill Valley Arts Commission’s First Tuesday Artwalk (5:30-7:30pm). Aside from the First Tuesday Artwalk, the Chamber’s office is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 12-4pm.

Barrengos exhibits regularly in the Bay Area since establishing her studio practice in 2009. Her work has shown at the de Young Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Studio Gallery/San Francisco, and is part of several private and corporate collections. She is represented by Blue Print Gallery in Dallas. When not in the studio, she is hiking the hills of Marin and San Francisco, recreating the Jardin du Luxembourg in her backyard, and traveling to places to see art.

Mill Valley’s monthly celebration of local art features a host of venues, including the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, Seager Gray Gallery, the Mill Valley Public Library, the Depot Bookstore & Café, City Hall, the Mill Valley Community Center and the Throckmorton Theatre, among many more. Receptions at each venue are Tuesday from 6–8pm. First Tuesday Artwalk Guide with venues and a map.
