Since she opened her beach-centric Surf + Sand shop earlier this year, Mill Valley resident Lauren Friis has paid homage to beach culture and sustainability.
She’s walking the walk in October, continuing the post-Mill Valley Film Festival fun with a 20th anniversary screening of Blue Crush, the 2002 film based on “Life’s Swell,” author Susan Orlean’s 1998 Outside magazine story about a real-life group of young teenage surfer girls in Hana, a small town in Maui, Hawaii. The film starred Kate Bosworth as the main character, living in a beach shack with three roommates including her rebellious younger sister. The group wakes up before dawn every morning to conquer the waves and count the days until the Rip Masters surf competition.
The 20th anniversary, set for a 6:45pm screening of Blue Crush is via a partnership with with Cinelounge at 40 Main St. In Tiburon. John Stockwell, who directed Blue Crush, will be on hand doing Q&A, and Mill Valley native band Marble Party will be performing live.
Friis has more on the way, including a fine jewelry trunk show on Oct. 16 (2-7pm) featuring Mill Valley native Neely Mack in addition to an artist in Maui – Puka Perri.
And as has been the case, Friis continues to open up her gorgeous space at 55 Throckmorton Ave. twice a week, guided 30-minute, community meditation classes on Tuesday and Thursday at 9am “for anyone that needs some zen after school drop-offs!” she says.
