Throckmorton Youth Performers, the Throckmorton Theatre‘s program for youth ages 8-20 to dive headlong into musical theatre productions, isn’t messing around in 2019.

On the heels of tackling Romeo & Juliet and The Addams Family in 2018, the program is set to tackle two of the top five highest-grossing Broadways shows of all time, starting with Chicago this week and The Lion King this summer.

The production of Chicago kicks off March 8 and runs through March 17 (full schedule below). For those that haven’t seen either the Broadway show or the massively popular feature film, Chicago is a tale of sin, corruption and all that jazz. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

The Throckmorton’s production kicks off March 8 at 7pm, with subsequent shows on March 9 (2pm & 7pm, March 10 (2pm), March 15 (7pm), March 16 (2pm & 7pm) and March 17 (2pm).

As always, youth ages 8-20, with direction by theater arts professionals (in this case award-winning director and choreographer Nicole Helfer (Assistant Chair, School of Theater, Oakland School of the Arts), have the opportunity to audition for production roles both onstage and backstage including crew, stage managing, light board operator, and prop and costume support.

The 411: The Throckmorton Youth Performers production of Chicago kicks off March 8 at 7pm, with subsequent shows on March 9 (2pm & 7pm, March 10 (2pm), March 15 (7pm), March 16 (2pm & 7pm) and March 17 (2pm). Throckmorton Theatre, 142 Throckmorton Avenue. MORE INFO & TIX.
