Since the moment the Mill Valley Depot Cafe and Bookstore & Cafe reopened in January, longtime regulars and newbies alike have streamed into the gorgeously renovated former train station to bask in Mill Valley’s most celebrated landmark in the heart of downtown and enjoy a delicious menu that linked the past with the present.

But general manager Matt Borello has long had it in the back of his mind that they were missing something: more menu items specifically catering to the kiddos.

Borello and his team worked their way through the chaotic early months of 2021, when all but takeout was an option due to the COVID-19 restrictions, and have evolved consistently as conditions allowed. They leaned heavily on the gorgeous, largely covered patio adjacent to the Depot Plaza when it became available.

Now with both indoor and outdoor dining available, the team has turned to bolstering its menu to make sure the kids are alright. They’ve added an array of Depot smoothies, a kids grilled cheese sandwich and a kids peanut butter and jelly sandwich to complement existing tyke-friendly items like Barton’s bagels, grilled cheese, fruit bowls and, of course, plenty of delicious pastries. Those items for the wee ones complement existing fare like an array of salads and sandwiches.

The Mill Valley Depot Cafe and Bookstore & Cafe is at 87 Throckmorton Ave. Open Sun.-Thu., 8am-5pm, Fri-Sat., 8am-7pm.
