In return, the sponsor would own the completed piece, or they might donate it to Mill Valley as a permanent public artwork for all to enjoy. āIf you look under it from the inside, you can see daylight throughout it, and thereās some places vegetation is starting to grow and get hold, and itās an untreated wood-shingle roof, so it has a fairly short lifespan,ā said Mark Neumann, the cityās deputy director of operations and utilities. The creekside mill in Cascade Canyon was one of the first built in the Bay Area, according to the Mill Valley Historical Society. Erected around 1835 by John Reed, it is one of the oldest standing mills in California.

For the 2022 edition of the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival, the towering redwoods stood tall for the art lovers attending on Sept. 18, when heavy rain at times and gusty winds made for less than optimal art loving. But because MVFAF is one of Mill Valley’s most deeply treasured events, a packed Saturday and a less-so Sunday balanced out ā and the result was another beautiful event.
