Shop Early, Shop Often: Friends of the Mill Valley Library Host Another Book Sale to Support the Treasure That Is MVPL – March 23rd, 11am-4:30pm

Whether it’s illuminating the deep history of black presence and achievement in Marin City or hosting an event for Marin Stargazers on Hauke Park South – these things both happened in the past week – the Mill Valley Public Library has long been a local treasure. In additional to its massive catalogue, the Friends of the Mill Valley Library, one of the two major supporters of the library, host regular Friends of the Library In-Person Book Sales. 2024 Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade Applications Are Available Now for One of Our Community’s Biggest Events of the Year – May 27th!

As always, the weekend extends well beyond the massive parade, including theĀ return of the Mill Valley Volunteer Firefighters’ Association’s Pancake Breakfast from 7-11am, the Mill Valley Historical Society’s annual ā€˜Walk Into History’ event, the 4-day KIDDO! Carnival and the after Parade party. The Kiddo! Memorial Day Celebration is from 12-5:15pm on Friends Field with free admission.

Local Residents Host ‘Gather for Gaza,’ a Fundraiser for Humanitarian Aid – Sunday, March 17th at the MV Community Center, 5:30-9pm

“Join us for a night filled with compassion for the people of Gaza with an activism hour and silent auction, followed by iftar, Hansia says. “We’re raising funds for food and medical aid for children in Gaza with 100% of the ticket sales and anything raised on the day of going towards Middle East Children’s Alliance, a non-profit based out of Berkeley.”

Marin City Historian Felecia Gaston and Mill Valley Public Library Archivists Unveil ‘Breaking Through: Black History at Tam High, 1910 to the Present’

The exhibit includes William L. Patterson, who graduated in 1911 and became a pioneering civil rights leader, as highlighted by the Mill Valley Historical Society in 2021.Ā  The exhibit also focuses on theĀ creation of Marin City as the then-best integrated shipyard on the West Coast, and the history of redlining and racial covenants in Marin, among others.

Snoyman also found a newspaper piece about the marriage of “Louise Anderson and Oren E. Lovett Jr., who were married in Reno on Thursday, October 19, by the Rev. Eickelberg. The bride has resided in Mill Valley for 18 months, being employed at Marinship. She was formerly in charge of Kay’s Gift Shop in Fairbanks, Alaska. She has a daughter who attends Tamalpais High School. The groom, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oren E. Lovett of 268 East Blithedale Ave., has lived in Mill Valley since 1916. He is a graduate of Tamalpais High School. He enlisted in the Navy and after a year’s service received an honorable discharge. He is now employed at Marinship.”
