As we chronicled earlier this year, a collective quartet of renowned local galleries – Seager/Gray Gallery, Desta Gallery, Kim Eagles-Smith Gallery and Robert Green Fine Arts – launched the Mill Valley Art Dealers Association to raise our community’s profile as an arts destination. The move has galvanized the local art dealer community, with some exciting news on the horizon.
In an effort to inform, educate and excite the art community about what the formation of the Mill Valley Art Dealers Association means, MarinArts, a nonprofit media organization dedicated to providing an online calendar and original content about the arts and culture in Marin County, is hosting “The Art of Collecting,” a livestream event on Thursday, June 16 at 12pm. The event is free but registration is required.
The event is set to be the first MarinArts Presents, a series of unique arts streamed events that underscore their seasonal fundraising. At “The Art of Collecting,” gallery owners will discuss the strategies, best practices, and joys of purchasing artwork. The live broadcast airs out of the Seager Gray Gallery at 12–12:45pm.
Gallery owners will share how they work with both novice and experienced art buyers as they decide on a single purchasing decision or move from buyer to lifelong collector. The conversation will demystify topics — from how collectors can identify a personal aesthetic and determine which artworks speak to them to building a collection around genre/period/regional/specific material, etc. Gallerists will explain terms catalogue raisonne, deaccessioning, a stable of artists, secondary market, blue-chip art, etc. They’ll share ideas for fun ways to develop an eye for art in ways that turn art collecting into a lifelong hobby filled with gallery openings, museum visits, international art fairs, and global studio visits.
