Annual Marin Music Chest scholarship winners.

From the Mill Valley Philharmonic and the Throckmorton Theatre’s Noon Concert Series to the Mill Valley Chamber Music Society and countless other organizations in between, the 94941 has long punched above its weight when it comes to classical music.

One of the reasons for that dates back to 1933, when San Francisco native and Kentfield resident Maude Fay Symington – famed throughout Europe as a Wagnerian soprano – founded the Marin Music Chest, a nonprofit organization that sought to bring world-renowned musicians to Marin.

At its annual Scholarship Winners Concert on May 1 (2pm) at First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo, the organization is showcasing nine young classical musicians honored with 2022 Marin Music Chest Scholarship awards. Each will perform solo. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert showcases musical performances by 2022 Marin Music Chest scholarship award recipients Natalie Oh (cello) of Greenbrae, Grace Brandes (flute) of Novato, Angus LaFemina (piano) of San Rafael, Thayer Jacobs (piano) of Mill Valley, Sydney Li-Jenkins (violin), Dheyan Lim (violin) of Mill Valley, Greta LaFemina (violin) of San Rafael, Ted Chor (cello) of Novato and Kailash Brumwell (piano) of Novato.

Marin Music Chest is a private, non-profit organization staffed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors with an extensive musical background and an Artistic Council with professional backgrounds in music. Marin Music Chest has been dedicated to fostering a greater interest and appreciation of classical music in Marin since 1933.
