Jason Dewees, the horticulturist and palm expert at Flora Grubb Gardens in San Francisco, will discuss his new book, Designing with Palms, on Thursday, March 29 at 1pm in a free event that is open to the public at the Outdoor Art Club, One West Blithedale, Mill Valley.

Dewees makes the case that the palm tree is so iconic that we can lose sight of the uses of palms for making lovely gardens and landscapes. In photographer Caitlin Atkinson’s photos for the book, we see why their beauty and diversity, ranging from delicate understory plants and hardy shrubs to graceful trees and even bamboo-like clusters, earn them a place in well-designed gardens throughout the warmer parts of the world, including the Bay Area.
