“There was a recent incident where a juvenile was riding, crashed, suffered some injuries, and the parent was issued a citation for him riding that vehicle without a license because of the type of vehicle … which was like riding an e-motorcycle, essentially,” Duenas said. McCracken said, “We continue to administer an e-bike safety course for juveniles who are cited on an e-bike for the first time. Our goal in developing this course was to continue offering education to youth in our city while keeping these violations from entering the justice system by avoiding a referral to traffic court.”

The ever-engaging band first appeared at Mount Tam Jam in 2013, the show that Sound Summit producer Michael Nash orchestrated and inspired him to launch Sound Summit in 2015. Members of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition have been remaining committed to maintaining 24/7 access to the multiuse path on the bridge. “We would rather they keep their $1.6m and keep the trail open,” Tarrell Kullaway, the organization’s director, said in an email. “We do not believe that the things the trail pilot was supposed to test have been tested yet,” Kullaway said. “In particular, the toll plaza, where the biggest bottleneck occurs, and the lack of safe connections on the Marin side should be addressed before data can be deemed accurate.” Kullaway also noted that the path from Main Street to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in San Rafael is incomplete, making access to and from the bridge on the Marin side challenging for some.

Talia Smith, the county’s director of legislative and intergovernmental affairs, provided other stark data points in a presentation to the board. From 2019 to 2022, 911 calls for all youth bike collisions in Marin County increased 110%. Records collected since 2023 show 10- to 15-year-olds have an accident rate five times higher than other age groups.

The state’s park system has 280 parks and about 5,200 miles of trails. The poll, conducted this spring, garnered more than 1,300 responses from the foundation’s members and supporters. Rachel Norton, the executive director of the foundation, said the effort was about introducing places to people who might not know about them. The survey featured 10 categories, including best for dog-friendly adventures, best for birdwatching, most kid-friendly, best for camping and best for wildflowers. “To people in San Francisco and in southern Marin, Mount Tam is not a secret, but it could be to someone from Southern California who is visiting the area for the first time, or somebody from the East Bay who hasn’t been over the bridge in a while,” Norton said.
