Marin IJ Editorial: Tam Valley Housing Proposal’s Scope Clashes With Other County Plans
How much say the board will have is uncertain given the state Legislature’s pro-housing initiative that has effectively undermined local review and control over proposed housing developments. The proposal calls for building a 32-unit affordable apartment complex on a half-acre at 150 Shoreline Highway. The location, in a classified flood zone, runs into the county’s planning focus to limit development in areas that might be threatened by climate change and rising tides.

Mill Valley got its first swanky day-through-midnight craft cocktail and chef-driven food venue with the opening of Corner Bar in April, moving into the prominent downtown space briefly occupied by Coho in 2023 and, before that, Vasco for 23 years. In July, Petaluma-founded Angela’s Organic Ice Cream debuted its fourth North Bay location in Mill Valley. In August, Tam Valley resident and chef Tony Adams opened Mill Valley Pasta Co., a downtown retail store catering to cooks and gift givers alike. Adams also operates a factory store in San Rafael and maintains a strong presence at seven Bay Area farmers markets along with other retail outlets.

“Those profiting from these transactions were unwilling to accept any meaningful accountability requirements, including that rents be discounted meaningfully from general market rents,” said Mark Stivers, director of advocacy for the California Housing Partnership, one of the program’s critics. “Greater accountability to the public is still very much needed.”

Tamalpais Scenic Railway. It has become a permanent home for the brilliantly recreated Gravity Car and an interpretive display highlighting this special time in California and Mt. Tamalpais history. The Barn has been constructed over a section of the 98 feet of standard gauge track at the historic rail siding on East Peak and will serve as an educational facility and visitor center for Marin and beyond.
