Jackie Ryan: “One of the outstanding jazz vocalists of her generation…rivaling the dexterous sass of Sarah Vaughan, the instinctive smarts of Carmen McRae and the scintillating verve of Diana Krall.” – JAZZ TIMES Jackie Ryan is happy to be singing at the Throckmorton theater as she is a Marin county native. She was born and raised in San Rafael. Her Irish father was a classically trained tenor, and her Mexican born mother who sang at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara, were both professional singers in their youth. Jackie remembers her parents bringing her up into the choir loft of St. Raphael’s church where they regularly sang for many years. Being always surrounded singing, it was only natural that Jackie would pursue a career in music. Jackie’s three previous CDs charted #1 nationwide on Jazzweek’s industry standard radio chart. She has recorded and/or performed with Cyrus Chestnut, Red Holloway, Toots Thielemans, Clark Terry, Larry Vuckovich, Jon Hendricks, and Paquito D’Rivera to name a few. Miss Ryan has performed in festivals and venues all over the world, including eight years at London’s famous Ronnie Scott’s club. She has sold out venues from New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center to SFJazz and Yoshis. Jackie‘s newest CD, “Recuerdos de Mi Madre” is a tribute to her mother and the music she loved.
One night later, the Throck welcomes Los Pinguous! Originally from Argentina, this band creates a tantalizing mix of Latin rhythms with Spanish guitars, Peruvian cajon (box-drum) and rich harmonies on vocals. They are one of the most popular Latin groups in Los Angeles, having come to the U.S. with a mixture of Latin rhythms, reggae, rumba flamenca and rock. The story began in 1999 when Adrián Buono, Enzo Buono, José Agote, Juan Manzur and Juan Manuel Leguizamón (later joined by bassist Santiago Lee) formed the band. In early 2001, Los Pinguos arrived in Los Angeles and began playing on the street (3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica) and local bars. They were discovered on the TV show, “The Next Big Star,” hosted and produced by Ed McMahon from “Star Search.” Los Pinguos have appeared on three of the famous Putumayo World Music compilation albums, Baila!, Radio Latino and World Party. They have performed worldwide, and their music has featured on TV shows like The Shield and The L Word, in movies like Imagining Argentina, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and two of their songs were included in Katherine Heigl’s movie The Ugly Truth. They also performed at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival with Suzanne Vega. The band participated in the award-winning documentary on street musicians Playing for Change. They’ve played with such acts as Plácido Domingo, Paul Anka, Taj Mahal, The Skatalites, The Neville Brothers, Pablo Montero, Ozomatli, Cigala and Charly García. Currently, Los Pinguos are touring and recording new songs.
