A pair of NorCal rock legends – Oakland-born singer/songwriter Michael Franti and Spearhead, along with Sacramento alt-rock pioneers Cake – are our incredibly headliners. They’ll be joined over the weekend by New Orleans’ very own Grammy Award-nominated and former NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner Tank and the Bangas, Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew’s REMAIN IN LIGHT, a special concert series featuring former members of Talking Heads; Seattle seven-piece The Dip; retro-soul revivalist Durand Jones; southern soul singer Black Joe Lewis and his multi-talented backing band The Honeybears; and Grammy-nominated Valerie June, a folk-soul singer known for her unique blend of Appalachian music. Rounding out the 2023 lineup includes Oakland’s own African psych-rock band Orchestra Gold and multi-piece Mill Valley student residents The Alive – both of whom further the festival’s commitment to supporting local arts and culture.
That’s a ton of music, but we’re not even close to being done. The Sweetwater Side Stage, powered by the legendary Sweetwater Music Hall – serves up seven incredible bands across two days at the southern end of Friends Field. They include Marble Party, Laura Benitez & the Heartache, Alex Jordan, Asher Belsky, Matt Jaffe, Anna Harrell and, the latest edition, Yorn’s Apostles.
Expect a ton of gorgeous visual art at MVMF, along with an array of kid-centric activities, including a super-sized roller skating rink compared to 2022. There’s also the massive Manzanita Market featuring home goods and jewelry from the likes of Poet and/the Bench, Clouds + Ladders, Presh, and Renata Rodrigues; Revery Salon will be offering festival hairdos and braiding; manicures and nail care with Liberation Nails; shirts, jumpsuits, and skirts from TYSA, and so much more including local philanthropy and community-centric organizations like Mountain Play Association and Play Marin.
To help squash out any hunger pangs while onsite at the festival, organizers have not only carefully curated a selection of local restaurants and food trucks featuring the best of Mill Valley’s culinary scene, but they have expanded this year’s food lineup to offer food lovers access to nearly a dozen popular culinary destinations. The new additions this year include Zalta, Johnny Doughnuts, Humphry Slocombe, Mariapilar Ice Creamery, and Hopmonk Tavern, while many of the returning food vendors are back from the inaugural event last spring. And in a nod to the ever-growing sense of community support, the Chamber is donating a portion of proceeds to a pair of local institutions including Kiddo!, which raises funds for arts education and more within the Mill Valley School District, as well as the Tam High Foundation, which has served as a inimitable backbone for high school programs across the board.
We’re also leveraging the incredibly generous support from our sponsors by turning each Community Sponsorship into scholarship tickets for students and artists who might not otherwise be able to attend MVMF. That tally is up to more than 420 scholarship tickets as of this week!!
HOW TO GET TO MVMF
To accommodate the expanded two-day affair that will soon host thousands of attendees from across the San Francisco Bay Area and far beyond, festival organizers have also provided transportation services for festival-goers this year including two free shuttle options – the Corte Madera Lot Shuttle and the Mill Valley Downtown Loop Shuttle. Shuttles begin their weekend service at 11:00 a.m., one hour before festival gates open, through 8:15 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Shuttles will follow a set route to the drop-off point, which will help patrons decrease local traffic congestion and increase their time for exploration within the festival grounds.
