Mill Valley’s Dipsea Race Tops ’10 Cities That Host Unique Races You Should Run’ List from Livability.com

Less than a month removed from the 108th Dipsea Race, which drew fantastic coverage from The New York Times, our iconic Mill Valley-to-Stinson Beach jaunt has garnered more acclaim.

This time, Livability.com, a website focused on “what makes small-to-medium sized cities great places to live,” has placed the Dipsea atop its “10 Cities That Host Unique Races You Should Run.” The piece praised the Dipsea for its beautiful scenery and fun atmosphere, as well as for being known for competitors camaraderie and willingness to help each other. 

The article is predicated on the idea that joining a town’s annual running or walking race is a great way to get a sense of the local flavor. “Not only will you see different parts of the city, geographically speaking, but you’ll also get a sense of the people who live there and what they care about,” Sarah Kuta writes. 

Kuta quotes former Marin Independent Journal sports editor Dave Albee as noting that the race is known for its often-treacherous terrain and stunning views, but also its camaraderie, with runners frequently helping each other get up off the ground when they fall along the route.“The bulk of the entrants are from Mill Valley,” Albee says. “It is a very much a family-oriented race as it connects and touches multiple generations of families who, by tradition, have competed in the race.”
