Sound Summit, one of the biggest and most locally beneficial live music events in town – set in one of the Bay Area’s most spectacular venues – is set to return to the historic Mountain Theater, a 4,000-seat natural stone amphitheater atop Mount Tamalpais with stunning views of San Francisco Bay and beyond.
Founder Michael Nash produces the event as an annual celebration of and fundraiser for Mount Tamalpais State Park by his nonprofit organization, Roots & Branches Conservancy. To date, Sound Summit has donated more than $250,000 to Mount Tam.
And for the 2022 edition, Nash & co. have landed one of the best rock bands on the planet in Philadelphia’s The War on Drugs, an Americana- and psychedelia-infused septet formed by Adam Granduciel in 2005. The guitar-forward band garnered a Grammy Award in 2018 for Best Rock Album.
The lineup also features Atlanta, Ga.-based singer-songwriter Faye Webster, folk rockers Fruit Bats and local stalwarts Wreckless Strangers.
Sound Summit has managed to land a massive array of renowned bands to Mt. Tam, including Wilco, Bob Weir & Phil Lesh, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Herbie Hancock, Jim James, Grace Potter, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Father John Misty, Dr. John & The Night Trippers, Los Lobos, Bill Frisell, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Nikki Lane, Allah-Las, Vetiver, The Mother Hips, The Stone Foxes, Cha Wa, Con Brio, and many more, providing an incredible soundtrack to a stirring backdrop.
KNBR morning show hosts Murph & Mac (aka Brian Murphy and Paul McCaffrey) will return as the day’s dynamic masters of ceremonies along with KPFA’s “Dead to the World” radio host Tim Lynch. DJ Andy Cabic is a long-time resident of the Bay Area who has filled rooms big and small with sound, both as a DJ and as the singer-songwriter of his group, Vetiver.
