After a hiatus of three years due to the pandemic, The Milley Awards for Creative Achievement‘ will return to Mill Valley Sunday, October 22, 2023. The annual gala event honors those who have distinguished themselves in their creative field, and/or who have contributed to the creative life of the Mill Valley community. 

Nominations for the award are now open. The nomination form is available on the event’s website, and hard-copy forms are available at Mill Valley City Hall, Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Mill Valley Library. Nominations made before the event was suspended in 2020 will remain in force.

Deadline for new nominations is 5 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2023. Deliver in person or by mail to Mill Valley City Hall, 26 Corte Madera Avenue, Mill Valley, CA 94941. 

There are five categories in which to nominate: Performing [theatre, dance] and Film Arts, Literary Arts, Musical Arts, Visual Arts and Design, and Contributions to the Creative Life of the Community. Each completed nomination must be accompanied by materials that illustrate the nominee’s Mill Valley connections and creative work. Letters of support, news articles, website materials are all helpful. The judges are picked each year from the community by the Milley Awards Committee. 

Scores of Mill Valley artists and supporters of the arts have won the award in the past. A complete list of past recipients can be found on the website, milleyawards.org.

In 2022, amidst a year-long celebration of arts and culture in Mill Valley, the Mill Valley Chamber/Enjoy Mill Valley highlighted some of the prominent, past Milley Award honorees who have helped put the 94941 on the map. They included rock ‘n’ roll icon Sammy Hagar, Mill Valley Film Festival founder Mark Fishkin, the Mill Valley Philharmonic, event producer Steve Bajor, Italian Street Painting Festival co-founder Sue Carlomagno, O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, architect Michael Painter and Marin Theatre Company Artist Director Jasson MInadakis.
