Two Neat, brilliant Bob Bijou’s witty, charming, always LOL card, gifts, toys and much more shop shut down the business at the end of of August. Like many businesses who’ve lasted through many eras, it is largely a sad day. But Bob and his witty co-horts are focused on landing this plane with all the joy and fart jokes Two Neat calls for. From bacon-scented air freshener to inarguably the best collection of greeting cards in Marin, Bijou’s Two Neat shop at 111 Throckmorton Ave. has been an institution in Mill Valley for 39 years ā with a little something for everyone.

After photographing the Golden Gate Bridge intensively for two years, I indeed came to see it anew. What I found most impressive, even more than the span’s status as an engineering and architectural icon, is its power as a symbol of possibility. When it was first proposed, naysayers declared there was no way to build what was then the tallest and longest suspension bridge in the world over such a treacherous strait. Undaunted, Joseph Strauss, the Golden Gateās visionary chief engineer, replied, āOur worldĀ today Ā revolves completely around things which at one time couldnāt be done because they were supposedly beyond the limits of human endeavor. Donāt be afraid to dream.ā I dedicateĀ Thirty-Six Views of the Golden Gate BridgeĀ to this spirit of possibility.

Longtime Tam High art teacher Zachary Gilmour, who is largely responsible for supporting the array of creative artwork from his students that ends up being showcased each year, is showcasing his students’ drawing and painting work on the walls of the Mill Valley Chamberās space at 85 Throckmorton Ave., including a reception on May 6th, 5:30-7:30 as part of the Mill Valley Arts Commissionās First TuesdayĀ Artwalk. The student’s work focuses on “In Our Community.”Ā Acrylic paintings on canvas by Intermediate Drawing & Painting. Students were asked to paint anĀ acrylicĀ painting of a member of ourĀ community. Students chose teachers, school staff members, coaches, people who work in local businesses, and family.

Amy Torgeson is an artist working in printmaking and collage, and she’s been chosen asĀ the Mill Valley Chamber’s selection as Artist of the month for March! Her work explores the collaborative relationship between both methods; printmaking provides material for collage, and the layering and multi-dimensional qualities of collage make their way back into her printmaking.Ā In addition to her artistic practice, she has spent over a decade teaching writing and art through arts organizations and after-school programs. She now leads art workshops in her Sausalito studio at ICB/ART.Ā ArtWalk is next Tuesday, March 4th from 5:30-7:30 pm.

“Turning away thought, I fall into a relaxed pace of working for the painting, The pictures start to build themselves. One stroke leads to the next and hours pass.Ā Marks and colors swarm around and in me to find their way on to the canvas. I have no expectation except the unexpected.Ā Here outside of time, surprise follows surprise. Ultimately the marks and colors come to agreement.Ā Ā The picture is complete. From the silence I see the work. As I look into the nameless field newly painted, the work whispers a name.”
