KRON4 asked Deberry if she thinks there’s any correlation between the national narrative and her local school board vote. “I hope that isn’t it because what we’re dealing with here is active acts of racism. We aren’t even having a conversation about wanting to increase the population of African American or Jewish students on campus,” Deberry said. “We’re saying that we would like them to feel safe from racist incidents that are happening at the campus.”

The new center has raised $50,000 thus far, Spahr said. The center’s rent is $1,200 a month, Otton confirmed. The top expenses are rent, insurance, and program costs, Spahr stated. “We too have basic operational expenses and will use some for community building events,” Spahr stated. “As you know, we are all volunteers and we hope to raise enough money to be able to employ staff one day. It is a community effort.”

The company last week won emergency approval for a 17% rate increase after the Los Angeles fires. A week after winning emergency approval to raise Californians’ home insurance premiums, State Farm is seeking to boost that rate hike even higher to 30%. On May 13, the state’s largest insurance company got the OK from regulators to increase rates by an average of 17% starting next month. State Farm secured the expedited rate hike after asserting it was in financial distress and expected $7.6 billion in claims arising from the deadly Los Angeles wildfires in January.

Carroll said that federal money, which accounts for approximately 10% of local schools’ total funding, is not used for DEI efforts. Carroll said the California Department of Education has not heard back from the federal government since issuing its responses. News of the ultimatum to Marin schools surfaced during the April 15 meeting of the Marin County Board of Education. Carroll provided members of the board with a brief summary of the DEI issue as part of the report that he provides at every meeting. The matter wasn’t agendized for discussion.
