As we continue to emerge toward normalcy, reminders of what normal looks like in Mill Valley keep popping up. Like live music returning to the Throckmorton Theatre, the top of Mount Tam and the Sweetwater Music Hall the long-awaited returns of the Hivery and La Ginestra.

Now it’s time for the return of Movies in the Park, the long-running series of free film screenings under the stars on a giant inflatable screen as part of a collaboration from Mill Valley Recreation, the Mill Valley Chamber and the California Film Institute.

The 2021 edition centers on anniversaries of cinematic classics, starting with “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” on July 9 at 8:30pm on Friends Field outside the Mill Valley Community Center. The series continues with “Shrek” on August 15 at Friends Field at 8:15pm and “Cars” at Sept. 17 at Friends Field at 7:30pm. It wraps up with “Princess Diaries” on Oct. 8 at 7pm at Old Mill Park.

The Movies in the Park series kicked off in 2014 and has gotten bigger and better every year since. In 2018, the MV Chamber organized a successful fundraising campaign to raise enough money to purchase all of the equipment required to produce the series, propelled by a $5,000 grant from the Outdoor Art Club.
