142 Throckmorton Theatre is proud to announce the launch of its Season of Sondheim, honoring the legendary composer and lyricist whose groundbreaking work redefined modern musical theater. The series features three of Sondheim’s most acclaimed shows, beginning with the darkly delicious classic Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, opening Halloween night, Friday, October 31.

Sweeney Todd, Sondheim’s macabre masterpiece of revenge, love, and meat pies, tells the tale of a wronged barber who returns to Victorian London to exact his vengeance—with music that’s as haunting as it is brilliant. Throckmorton’s Mainstage shows feature two alternating casts in many of the main roles, a hallmark of the theatre’s commitment to giving more young performers the chance to shine on stage and performances run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through November 16, with an additional performance on Thursday, November 13. Note: the show contains mature themes and implied violent content.

To kick things off, the cast will present a special preview performance at The Depot in downtown Mill Valley on Friday, October 24 at 4:45 p.m. sharp, offering a taste of what’s to come. On opening night, audiences are encouraged to come in costume and celebrate Halloween. And throughout the run, you can try a special Sweeney Todd-inspired offering at Mill Valley Baking Company, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the theatre.

Over the past two years, Throckmorton’s Mainstage shows have earned rave reviews in the Marin Independent Journal and other local outlets for their high production values and standout youth performers who come from all over the Bay Area. The shows continue to build and draw a wider mix of theatre-goers from across Marin — people who appreciate that it’s more fun, more affordable, and far easier than heading into the city for a touring musical production.

To deepen that sense of connection, the theatre has also launched A Stage for Our Stories, a limited video series where members of the Throckmorton family share personal reflections and memories shaped by their experiences at the theater. To go behind the scenes with A Stage for Our Stories, visit the YouTube channel or subscribe the theater newsletter.

The season will continue with Sondheim’s Company in the winter and Into the Woods in the spring.
