City Council Discusses After Action Report on December 27, 2024 Flooding
“We were caught off guard by the three inches of rain in three hours, a really significant water main break, and our pump station not having the right amperage in a storm like this,” Cusimano said. “That is really unprecedented, but it caught us off guard… and we fell short on engagement and communication.” He emphasized that while staff worked hard during the event, the City must improve its emergency response and communication strategies moving forward.

In the wake of recent wildfires, homeowners and builders in the Bay Area and across California are rethinking the ways to better protect their homes. Jimmy Singer’s family has lived on the heavily wooded hillsides of Mill Valley for decades. Homes are surrounded by towering redwoods and other vegetation that can quickly become tinder for a destructive wildfire. “Living in the hills in California, we’ve thought about fires forever,” said Singer. Singer does what he can to harden his home and make it more fire-resistant, including working with neighbors to help maintain defensible space. “It kind of brings a community aspect to know that if I do all this work on my property, somebody sharing the fence line is also doing that work too,” said Singer.

The voter-approved formation of the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority has advanced long-needed work to create and maintain so-called “fuel breaks” in hopes of giving fire crews a fighting chance to save neighborhoods. Crews have been working to create large fuel breaks in Ross Valley and Novato. Reducing vegetation along evacuation routes has been another priority.

Space Theory offers a complete system, including storage units, pulls, integrated lighting, modular interior accessories, countertops, backsplashes and sinks solely for the kitchen.

Researchers found that by directing evacuees to use a less-frequented on-ramp to Highway 101 off Hamilton Drive, implementing a contraflow strategy on East Blithedale Avenue, and encouraging households to evacuate with only one vehicle significantly reduced overall evacuation times, cutting nearly 2 hours off the process. In response, in 2024, City officials conducted staff drills, revamped evacuation routes, and emphasized to residents the message: “Take one car, save the lives of those behind you.” This strategy ensures a faster, safer evacuation for all residents. Mill Valley got its first swanky day-through-midnight craft cocktail and chef-driven food venue with the opening of Corner Bar in April, moving into the prominent downtown space briefly occupied by Coho in 2023 and, before that, Vasco for 23 years. In July, Petaluma-founded Angela’s Organic Ice Cream debuted its fourth North Bay location in Mill Valley. In August, Tam Valley resident and chef Tony Adams opened Mill Valley Pasta Co., a downtown retail store catering to cooks and gift givers alike. Adams also operates a factory store in San Rafael and maintains a strong presence at seven Bay Area farmers markets along with other retail outlets.
