This week, we’re focusing on one of the most important shifts you can make: Avoiding plastic isn’t just an environmental choice—it’s a health decision. Here’s why: 99% of plastic is made from fossil fuels, and it contains harmful additives like BPA, phthalates, and PFAS. These chemicals leach into our food, drinks, and personal care products, especially when exposed to heat or oil. Members of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition have been remaining committed to maintaining 24/7 access to the multiuse path on the bridge. “We would rather they keep their $1.6m and keep the trail open,” Tarrell Kullaway, the organization’s director, said in an email. “We do not believe that the things the trail pilot was supposed to test have been tested yet,” Kullaway said. “In particular, the toll plaza, where the biggest bottleneck occurs, and the lack of safe connections on the Marin side should be addressed before data can be deemed accurate.” Kullaway also noted that the path from Main Street to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in San Rafael is incomplete, making access to and from the bridge on the Marin side challenging for some.

The Trump administration’s anti-DEI mandate is apparently committed to letting politics get in the way of government’s job of keeping public assets safe and in good repair. San Francisco, Marin and Sonoma counties send a lot of tax dollars to Washington. Getting some of it back to help make sure this vital bridge survives an earthquake is more important than a symbolic mandate from the White House. The board’s decision reflects its responsibility for maintaining a strong and safe bridge. In its prudent and practical decision, the board’s sound public policy is trumping politics, as it should.

The district that operates the Golden Gate Bridge has removed diversity, equity and inclusion language in policy documents to avoid backlash from the Trump administration. A $400 million federal grant to support the final five-year phase of the seismic retrofit of the iconic span was potentially at stake, said Denis Mulligan, general manager of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. Bridge tolls are the district’s primary source of revenue, and, unlike most other transit agencies, the district receives no dedicated state or local tax funding.

The Tamalpais Valley project also has attracted criticism because of its location in an area that has been classified as a flood zone by the Federal Emergency Management Agency; the scant number of parking spaces being supplied; and its height. Several planning commissioners expressed concerns about these and other issues during a hearing on Thursday. County planning staff the county is powerless to mandate any changes that aren’t based on strict, objective design standards and gross threats to public health. “Understand that we cannot require any parking for this project,” Marin County Planning Manager Jeremy Tejirian said.
