Marin Voice: Cost of Housing in our County has Become Obscene
I have met a number of Marin residents facing homelessness. One works full-time while also caring for her developmentally disabled son. Another pays more in rent than her entire monthly income, watching her savings shrink monthly. These residents are in their 70s. They are scared, angry and feel betrayed by their community. They do not match the stereotypes of the homeless.

On Monday, October 14th from 7-8 PM at Assembly at 319 Miller Ave., a community forum about Measure L, an important local initiative aimed at securing Mill Valley’s future. This is your chance to learn how Measure L will provide the funding needed to protect our city from wildfire risks, maintain critical infrastructure like roads and emergency routes, and support needed maintenance for our beloved library and community center. With unanimous support from the Mill Valley City Council and endorsements from 12 former Mayors, Measure L has also been backed by key local organizations including the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce.

What remains murky, however, is what the practical effect will be on the project, if Freccero sticks with his tentative ruling. “I had lots of questions before, and I still have them,” Freccero said. “I’m trying to understand what happens next.” Over $30 million dollars in tax-exempt bonds to finance the project have already been sold. Save Our City, an advocacy group, filed suit in May 2023 to void the Marin County Board of Supervisors’ 3-2 decision in March 2023 to approve the issuance of up to $40 million in tax-exempt revenue bonds for use in underwriting the planned building at 825 Drake Ave.

“We find that happiness is aligned with specific quality of life ratings. In particular, jobs, leisure, and housing,” Baldassare said, according to the report. “In our polling, we also looked at personal finance. But the biggest change we’ve seen over time has been satisfaction with jobs, which went from 52% saying they were very satisfied in our first polling to 31% today.” Other polling, by Gallup, asked Californians to rate their satisfaction of life from 1 to 10. A research team from the University of Oxford then compiled all 215,801 responses into a map of the state, broken down by county.

“There are benefits to a workforce that isn’t compelled to commute daily from East Bay counties with lower housing prices. Having grocery store cashiers, teachers, police officers and firefighters who live and work in the towns they serve outweighs any conceived downsides. Traffic is a plague common to all prosperous suburbs. We’re in fantasyland if we believe that congestion on Highway 101 and Marin’s east-west boulevards will ever evaporate.”
