North Bay Biz Journal: Marin County Sees July Unemployment Rates Rise Across North Bay, Including Mill Valley
The unemployment rate in Marin County was 4.1% in July, up from a revised 3.8% in June. The county’s unemployment rate in July 2023 was 3.4%. The county added jobs in construction, trade, transportation and utilities, leisure and hospitality. Fewer jobs were available in government.

“From the beginning of this process a year ago, my emphasis was on this generation doing what it takes to harden our town for subsequent generations,” Vice Mayor Stephen Burke said. “A new roof on the library is certainly part of that, but it’s the deeper investments we have to make that we haven’t necessarily fully understood the scope of yet.” “We may feel comfortable at the moment, but this investment is what our generation needs to do on behalf of those who come after us,” he said.

“I love the duality of our program,” says Jennifer Morris, a longtime supporter of the program. “Families benefit from the free learn-to-swim lessons, high schoolers benefit from meaningful, hands-on volunteer experience,” noting that the program has one paid Site Supervisor position, which they fill with a high school student. “The paid position is a great opportunity for a high schooler to get leadership experience.”

Organizers have several sites in mind, the IJ reports, though they are mum on specifics. Proposals still have to be vetted, Runner said, acknowledging that there are few potential sites left in Marin. “We’re still working on the long-term goals,” Runner said. The restoration work on the 103-year-old, 36-ton engine is being guided by brothers Jeff and Don Millerick at a workshop in Sebastopol.
