The Mill Valley Film Fest revived the Window Display Contest for businesses in Mill Valley during the Mill Valley Film Festival, and organizers and businesses were thrilled! MVFF organizers are excited to engage with businesses in the immediate downtown and throughout the 94941. Award Presentation: Certificates were handed out on the afternoon of the Mill Valley Art Walk on Tuesday, October 7.

Famed director Martin Scorsese made news last month when he explained to film critic Peter Travers why he no longer went to see movies in a theater. Citing audience cellphone use, incessant talking and generally restive behavior that often drowns out dialogue, the director of “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull” and “Goodfellas” told Travers he’d had enough. Of course, big screens in the U.S. were in big trouble long before Scorsese’s admission. The pandemic only turbo-charged the pre-COVID trend away from theaters in favor of home-based entertainment media. In the first half of 2020, Netflix added more than 26 million subscribers. So when shuttered theaters reopened, audiences — specifically American audiences — did not rush back in droves.

“The work that we do is absolutely amazing, but the extensiveness of the work and the pressure of the work, it never goes away,” Elton said. “I can’t remember the last time I had an actual vacation. We’re always working. So, as rewarding as it can be, I’d like to relieve the pressure a little bit.” Elton’s said her new role will be “curatorial.”

The Marin Independent Journal has been a beacon of top-notch journalism for decades, and this year has been no different.The organization earned 20 awards — including five first-place honors — in an annual statewide journalism contest. The California News Publishers Association announced the results of its California Journalism Awards at a gala in Universal City on May 17. The association, which distributes awards by circulation division, includes hundreds of publications. The judges honored the IJ with a first-place award for in-depth reporting for a six-part series on President Trump’s impact on Marin. The paper also took the top prize for outstanding local news coverage of the November 2024 elections.

The state’s park system has 280 parks and about 5,200 miles of trails. The poll, conducted this spring, garnered more than 1,300 responses from the foundation’s members and supporters. Rachel Norton, the executive director of the foundation, said the effort was about introducing places to people who might not know about them. The survey featured 10 categories, including best for dog-friendly adventures, best for birdwatching, most kid-friendly, best for camping and best for wildflowers. “To people in San Francisco and in southern Marin, Mount Tam is not a secret, but it could be to someone from Southern California who is visiting the area for the first time, or somebody from the East Bay who hasn’t been over the bridge in a while,” Norton said.
