Sweetwater Music Hall Fall Lineup: From Pink Talking Fish to Zepparella, Reggae, Bluegrass, and Beyond!
Sweetwater Music Hall, the storied Mill Valley nonprofit venue that has been a home to the counterculture and beyond since 1972, keeps the fall calendar packed with music for Deadheads, hippies, and fans of every genre. Jam fans will zero in on Pink Talking Fish, the beloved fusion of Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, and Phish, performing November 1 and 2. For those who live in the Allman Brothers’ zone, Freestone Peaches hit the stage October 4, while Zeppelin devotees will be thunderstruck by Zepparella, bringing two nights of classic rock fire October 17–18.

Beth Davila Waldman is a cross-disciplinary artist using photography, painting, assemblage and installation. Her work explores the impact of socio-political trends on cultural landscapes, often through imagery laden with indicators of economic and social status, presented in a manner that emulates the sheer stress of imposed change. Waldman’s constructed vistas re-conceive the notion of sanctuary amidst the realities of colonization, and invite meditations on civil access. Waldman imbues her work with a unique materiality by printing or transferring photographs on a plethora of materials—from tarp to sails, canvas to paper.

Poet and/the Bench begins a series of celebrations of emerging contemporary design for their 10th year anniversary in November. On October 4, visiting Topanga Canyon-based fine artist Danielle Hutchens will be in person for her Between Soil and Sky exhibition reception. Danielle has adopted using earth-friendly practices in her art. Her paintings primarily feature natural pigments she harvests and develops, a beautifully archival and non-toxic medium. Her new collection was created after the Los Angeles fires when “small things– tender shoots, shy buds– started to unfurl. Life, working underground in the quiet dark, was beginning again and in a soft, yet vibrant way.”

Sweetwater Music Hall, the intimate nonprofit live music venue established in 1972, is hosting “Tunes from Our Backyard” a performance at Mill Valley’s Sweetwater Music Hall on Sunday, October 19, celebrates the WPA California Folk Music Project, a collection of live field recordings of traditional ethnic folk songs recorded around the Bay Area during the Great Depression.
Between 1938 and 1940, San Francisco musicologist Sidney Robertson, working out of offices at UC Berkeley with funding from the New Deal’s Works Progress Administration (WPA), documented the music of ethnic communities around Northern California. With a small team hired from the state’s relief rolls, Robertson collected 35 hours of folk songs in 12 languages, along with photographs and drawings of musical instruments immigrants brought with them when they left their home countries for California. Robertson was the first collector to record folk songs of ethnic immigrants and call them “American.”

“During the kiosk trial period, staff collected and responded to approximately 25 complaints,” a staff report said. “Complaints ranged from not understanding how to use the kiosk, not liking the kiosk, lack of ease of use, expressing that the kiosk was positioned too far away from their vehicle, frustration there was a line to use the kiosk, and that it was less convenient than individual meters.” The Police Department said it acknowledged and understood these concerns, but also noted the advantages of kiosks over the meters. They required less maintenance, had more payment options and were more environmentally friendly.

Add to it a dash of mystery reminiscent of the television series “Bridgerton,” in which the townspeople pore over Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers while speculating about who among them is dishing their dirt. At yard parties and around the Marin Country Mart, everyone seems to be asking the same question: Who is behind Marin Lately? If anyone knew, they weren’t telling. Until now. The answer, dear readers? Scroll on. It all started in February with a simple headline: “Tiburon Still Boring.”

This Peer to Peer Fundraising Cycling Event celebrates the KBF’s mission to inspire and empower people with spinal cord injuries to lead active, engaged lives through adaptive sports and recreation, and the City’s commitment to a improving access to the incredible recreation opportunities in and around town for folks accessing the area by bike, on foot, by wheelchair, or on public transportation. The event will include a community celebration open to all on Depot Plaza from 12-4 on Saturday the 25th, featuring food, beverage, live music from Sean Carscadden, and an opportunity to learn more about adaptive sports, the KBF’s mission, and TMAC’s work.
