āThe restoration of the No. 9 represents the very best impulses of the preservation community,ā said Director of the California State Railroad Museum Ty Smith. āAlthough the locomotive wonāt steam passengers up Mt. Tamalpais, it serves as a window into a remarkable episode in California History. Weāre grateful to be able to share in telling this important story.ā The prized No. 9 steam locomotive will be on display in the Museumās Roundhouse until January 2026. Local economies are deprived of the investment homeowners make and the stable supply of workers who set down roots for the long term. Children without stable housing live more disrupted lives with poorer educational outcomes, which prevents them from accessing high income-earning opportunities as they grow into the next generation of potential homebuyers. Families that are unable to build generational wealth struggle to contribute to societal wealth.

In December, astronomers calculated that the asteroid YR4 had a small but not insignificant chance of striking Earth in 2032, a scenario that experts postulated could have more explosive potential than 500 Hiroshima nuclear bombs. Researchers reclassified YR4 as a non-threat in February, but the interim period was the first time that the International Asteroid Warning Network had been activated to respond to a threat since its formation about a decade ago. āThe fact is that humanity does have a system that has been put in place in the last decade, essentially, and it worked for YR4,ā said Danica Remy, president of the B612 Foundation, a Mill Valley nonprofit focused on identifying near-Earth objects (NEOs) that pose a threat to humanity.

The Marin Independent Journal has been a beacon of top-notch journalism for decades, and this year has been no different.The organizationĀ earned 20 awards ā including five first-place honors ā in an annual statewide journalism contest. The California News Publishers Association announced theĀ resultsĀ of its California Journalism Awards at a gala in Universal City on May 17. The association, which distributes awards by circulation division, includes hundreds of publications. The judges honored the IJ with a first-place award for in-depth reporting for a six-part series on President Trumpās impact on Marin. The paper also took the top prize for outstanding local news coverage of the November 2024 elections.
