Carla Roth lives and paints in Marin County, California. After growing up in a small Northern California college town, she attended University of California, Berkeley, earning a degree in Design. A thirty year career in interior design followed.
In 2000, she signed up for a watercolor workshop and was instantly hooked. This led to several years studying water media at the College of Marin, and taking a variety of workshops from well known national artists. In 2005 she began studying oil painting, which has continued to be her primary focus.
Her studio is in the historic ICB Building in Sausalito, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. The light and colors of the bay, which she can see from her studio windows, inspire her every day. Her focus is on common objects, structures, and scenery.
Her art is a response to what is happening around her at a moment in time, or recent past. She continues to experiment with new techniques and frequently takes workshops or classes as a lifelong seeker of new knowledge. Though the majority of her subject matter revolves around the Bay Area and Northern California, she gleans subject matter from her national and international travel. Her latest series has focused on a wide variety of vessels. Large and small still life paintings are the result.
Carla has won a number of awards while showing her work in gallery group shows, solo shows, Marin Open Studios, the Marin County Fair, ICB Building Winter Open Studios, Artists at Work, the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, and several retail stores. Carla has also been juried into shows at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, The Monterey Museum of Art,The Sebastopol Center for the Arts and the Sausalito Center for the Arts. She was selected for the first DeYoung Open, which will be held every three years at The De Young Museum in San Francisco.
