Marin Theatre in Mill Valley is kicking off 2025 with Waste, the organizations fresh take on a century-old play that will have you on the edge of your seat. This provocative Edwardian drama follows an ambitious politician, Henry Trebell, on the cusp of bringing his life’s work to fruition.
Marin Theatre Executive Artistic Director Lance Gardner returns to the stage for the first time in over five years to play Trebell, whose promising career is curtailed by the threat of scandal over an illicit affair in Waste. The play cynically focuses on the insiders who scheme to use the scandal to manipulate political outcomes.
The Times called it “Provocative. Intellectually stimulating and emotionally gripping. A masterpiece of its time.” Its Off-Broadway revival was hailed by The New York Post as “A remarkable play, full of thought and life.” The National Theatre revival in November 2015 was lauded as “Extraordinary. By some distance the best production to grace a National Theatre stage since Rufus Norris took the reins,” by British Theatre.
Marin Theatre’s new production is adapted and directed by Carey Perloff, artistic director emerita of American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.
Don’t miss this riveting drama, still sharply topical today, featuring Lance’s return to the stage!
