Behind 309 yards passing from quarterback Braden Young, with three touchdowns going to receiver Andrew Gordon, the Tam High Football squad rolled to a 35-15 victory over arch rival Redwood last Saturday.
Tam racked up 483 yards of offense on the day, jumping out to a 14-0 advantage in the first quarter thanks to an explosive 61-yard run from Jake Son, who took off down the left sideline before zigzagging to eventually burst into the right side of the end zone, the Marin IJ reported.
“Redwood is always a great opponent every year and a great rival,” Young told the IJ. “We definitely had the game circled on our schedule. We came out hot and got it done. I feel great where we are right now. This win was definitely a great confidence boost for the playoffs.”
Those playoff seedings have been unveiled, and Tam is heading to away playoff game against Casa Grande High in Petaluma on Friday, November 10 at 7pm.
The North Coast Section playoff berth builds on the momentum of the 2022 season, with the team earning its biggest win in recent memory in 2022, grinding its way back from a 10-point halftime deficit and the loss of its starting quarterback to defeat Redwood High for the first time since 2013. After the Redwood defense was softened up just enough, quarterback Braden Young, who replaced injured starter Nick Schottenfeld to start the second half and the squad to the victory behind an arsenal of running backs.
But in this 2023 season, Young has not only been the major story at Tam. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound standout is having one of the top quarterback seasons not only in the Bay Area, but the state.
Young has garnered widespread attention well beyond Marin. MaxPreps reports that Young leads California high school football quarterback in passing yardage, having thrown for more than 2,900 yards in nine games.
He has committed to a Claremont McKenna College.
