Employees at the Mill Valley location of salad chain Mixt had quite the shock when actor Tom Holland stopped by for a salad on Monday. Abigail Zatarain, the restaurant’s general manager, said that the “Spider-Man” actor arrived by himself around 1 p.m. and waited in line to order just like any other customer. 

Her co-workers recognized him, but they didn’t say anything at first — they just took his order for an elote salad and Dave’s taco bowl. He seemed to know exactly what he was going to order from the moment he came in, and he appeared to be looking around to make sure nobody was watching him, she said. When her co-workers notified Zatarain of their unexpected celebrity guest, she waited for him to approach the register.

“I said, ‘I have a question. Are you Spider-Man?’” she said. “And he laughed, and he says, ‘Yes, I’m Tom.’”

Zatarain said she thanked him for visiting and chatted with him a little, and he shared that it was his first time at Mixt. When she asked if they could take a photo, Holland “took my phone and took a selfie with us,” she said. “He was the one to take the picture.” Her son and her daughter are big fans of Holland, and when she showed her kids the photo later, they freaked out, she said. 

When asked if she knew who the second salad he ordered was for, she said she didn’t. “Maybe for his wife,” she speculated, referring to superstar actor Zendaya. While it’s unclear why Holland was in Mill Valley, Zendaya grew up in Oakland and was spotted at Green Apple Books in San Francisco, as well as several other Bay Area businesses, earlier this year. 

Zatarain said she was nervous and excited to meet Holland, and also surprised by how nice, polite and humble he was. She added that the “Odyssey” actor tipped very well. 

“He made our day because we were like, oh my God, he’s so important,” Zatarain said. “Like, he’s Spider-Man, and he came by himself like a normal person waiting for his turn, being patient. It was so unbelievable.”
