San Quentin Film Festival (SQFF), the first ever to take place inside a prison, today announced the members of the prestigious 2026 Industry Jury for the 3rd Annual SQFF, to be held October 22–23 inside San Quentin Rehabilitation Center in Marin County, CA, including three-time Academy Award-winning actor and director Sean Penn, Karen Pittman, Daveed Diggs, Piper Perabo and Boots Riley. Official Selections will be announced in September.
Industry Jurors will select finalists and winners in the Best Short Narrative and Documentary categories, which is open exclusively to currently and formerly incarcerated filmmakers. They will also select the winners in the Best Screenplay and Documentary Pitch Competition. Among SQFF’s most distinctive features, the Pitch Competition invites incarcerated writers to present original story ideas to a panel of industry professionals and receive direct, craft-level feedback — an exercise in storytelling and presentation rarely available inside.

“Opening our 3rd Annual San Quentin Film Festival fills me with pride and joy,” said SQFF Artistic Director Cori Thomas. “This festival is a labor of love, made possible by our inside and outside teams, the San Quentin administration, our board, and the filmmakers we are honored to celebrate. As always, we are especially grateful to our extraordinary jurors, who generously give of their time and expertise; their engagement gives incarcerated and formerly incarcerated filmmakers a rare opportunity to have their work seen, considered, and taken seriously by established leaders in the film industry—an experience that affirms the value of their voices and lies at the very heart of why this festival exists.”
