Iād describe the pizza served at Tamalpie in Mill Valley as one with a Neapolitan crust and California-style toppings. This style suits its clientele just fine. The crust is thinnish, softly chewy and just a little crisp on the bottom. Toppings are fresh and first-rate, like Hobbsā meats and house-made tomato sauce. Tamalpie, which opened in 2011, is firmly grounded in Mill Valley at the foot of Mount Tamalpais with a list of pizzas named after hiking trails and old camps on the mountain, like Cascade, Railroad Grade and Bootjack.

The Trump administrationās anti-DEI mandate is apparently committed to letting politics get in the way of governmentās job of keeping public assets safe and in good repair. San Francisco, Marin and Sonoma counties send a lot of tax dollars to Washington. Getting some of it back to help make sure this vital bridge survives an earthquake is more important than a symbolic mandate from the White House. The boardās decision reflects its responsibility for maintaining a strong and safe bridge. In its prudent and practical decision, the boardās sound public policy is trumping politics, as it should.

Born Martin William Smith in Reading, Pennsylvania, he studied creative writing at the University of Pennsylvania and started out as a journalist, including a brief stint at the AP and at the Philadelphia Daily News. Success as an author arrived slowly. He had been a published novelist for more than a decade before he broke through in the early 1980s with āGorky Park.ā His novel came out when the Soviet Union and the Cold War were still very much alive and centered on Renkoās investigation into the murders of three people whose bodies were found in the Moscow park that Smith used for the bookās title.

Famed director Martin ScorseseĀ made news last monthĀ when he explained to film critic PeterĀ Travers why he no longer went to see movies in a theater. Citing audience cellphone use, incessant talking and generally restive behavior that often drowns out dialogue, the director of āTaxi Driver,ā āRaging Bullā and āGoodfellasā told Travers heād had enough. Of course, big screens in the U.S. were in big trouble long before Scorseseās admission. The pandemic only turbo-charged the pre-COVID trend away from theaters in favor of home-based entertainment media. In the first half of 2020,Ā Netflix added more than 26 million subscribers. So when shuttered theaters reopened, audiencesĀ ā specifically American audiencesĀ ā did not rush back in droves.

The district that operates the Golden Gate Bridge has removed diversity, equity and inclusion language in policy documents to avoid backlash from the Trump administration. A $400 million federal grant to support the final five-year phase of the seismic retrofit of the iconic span was potentially at stake, said Denis Mulligan, general manager of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. Bridge tolls are the districtās primary source of revenue, and, unlike most other transit agencies, the district receives no dedicated state or local tax funding.
