Happy Feet Dance School Presents Three Shows of ‘Dancing Through Life’ – Sunday, May 4th, 12pm, 3pm & 6pm at Novato High School’s Center for the Arts

Happy Feet is proud to celebrate 47 years of dance in our community! This year they are back at Novato High School’s Center for the Arts Theatre with three shows. The title of their performances is “Dancing Through Life.” All three shows will feature Happy Feet’s advanced student ensemble performing a suite of dances from Wicked, with original choreography by their teaching staff. Show 1 and Show 2 will feature their younger dancers, preschool through middle school, along with their advanced high school students. Show 3 will feature their middle school and advanced high school dancers, along with their adult dancers.

Friends of the Mill Valley Library Has a Volunteer Opportunity for Enthusiastic Volunteers to Lend a Hand in the Friends Bookstore

The Friends of the Library are looking for a couple of enthusiastic volunteers to lend a hand in the Friends Bookstore. The task involves carefully packing overstocked books into sturdy bankers boxes, loading them onto a cart (each box weighs around 30 pounds), transferring the packed boxes to another location in the Bookstore, and then stacking them neatly. This should take about 1 to 2 hours, 1 or 2 days a week. If you’re interested, reach out to Friends board member Jim Derich at jim.derich@friendsmvl.org.

Mill Valley Chamber Once Again Is Set to Showcase the Artwork of Tam High Students in Zachary Gilmour’s Drawing and Painting Class in May – ArtWalk is Tuesday, May 6th, 5:30–7:30pm!

Longtime Tam High art teacher Zachary Gilmour, who is largely responsible for supporting the array of creative artwork from his students that ends up being showcased each year, is showcasing his students’ drawing and painting work on the walls of the Mill Valley Chamber’s space at 85 Throckmorton Ave., including a reception on May 6th, 5:30-7:30 as part of the Mill Valley Arts Commission’s First Tuesday Artwalk. The student’s work focuses on “In Our Community.” Acrylic paintings on canvas by Intermediate Drawing & Painting. Students were asked to paint an acrylic painting of a member of our community. Students chose teachers, school staff members, coaches, people who work in local businesses, and family.

The wait is over— Woander Store has officially opened its doors! Woander is a family play store featuring family friendly games and storytelling products that opened in downtown Mill Valley at 73 Throckmorton on April 19th! Lots of supporters and on-lookers celebrated the event with a ribbon cutting ceremony, with lots of fun and magic all afternoon. There was a live magic show, open gameplay, puppet greeters and a puppet making activity. There is so much more to come!

Marin IJ: Marin City Bus Shelter Art Project Honors Community’s Black Pioneers

“Her granddaughter and my brother are married,” she said. “So the legacy doesn’t stop — because we are a close community. Even though a lot of first-generation people who came here are gone, their legacy continues.” The bus shelter art project is part of an ongoing effort to tell the enclave’s Black history led by Felecia Gaston, a local historian, educator and nonprofit executive who has partnered with the county’s schools and libraries to teach this California story. “There were maybe 20,000 Black people who worked in the shipyard from 1942 to 1945,” said Gaston. “We selected a few because we actually have their oral histories.”

The Tamalpais Union High School District will provide counseling for students “for as long as we need to,” said Tara Taupier, the district’s superintendent. “Communities don’t recover from these kinds of things quickly,” Taupier said. “I know all we can do is love each other when a tragedy like this happens.” The vigil on Saturday included a six-minute silent meditation — a minute for each teen — led by the Rev. Floyd Thompkins of Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in Marin City.

The Postpartum Support Center (PPSC) invites the Marin community to the 5th Annual Walk for Moms on Sunday, May 18, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Lagoon Park (Civic Center), 160 Armory Dr., San Rafael. Held during Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, this free, family-friendly event brings together hundreds of families, advocates, and local organizations to raise awareness of perinatal mental health, fund vital support services, and celebrate the strength and resilience of Marin’s mothers and families. Participants will enjoy a festive afternoon walking around the Civic Center lagoon, followed by live music, family activities, raffles, and community resources—all in support of a cause that touches families across the region.
